Currently untitled, this series explores the artist’s relationship to grief through oil paintings inspired by images taken around the time of her mother’s passing in 2019. Through the use of negative space, low light, and high contrast she seeks to make sense of a life that was abruptly defined by what was not there. She pairs detailed realism with dark atmospheres to echo the confusing juxtaposition of memories that often occur in the midst of grief, pulling from motifs that are intensely personal to make sense of the profound and ultimately universal experience of living with loss. Deeply sensitive and infused with a fundamental sense of love, the series’ greater goal is to allow the artist to spend time with her memories in order to mend the rupture between now and then.
